Professional Profile
Niilofur Farrukh is a Karachi-based art interventionist whose work lies at the intersection of art criticism, publication, curation, and public art in Pakistan. Her primary focus is on decolonial issues and the convergence of political ideology and visual narratives. Her research and writing explore the interdisciplinary connections often lost in Pakistan’s complex cultural and political landscape.
Publications
Niilofur has authored three books and numerous essays. Her most recent book is "A Beautiful Despair - The Art and Life of Meher Afroz" (Le Topical Printers Pvt. Ltd., 2020). Her other works include "Pioneering Perspectives" (Ferozsons Pvt. Ltd., 1998) and "Pakistan's Radioactive Decade: An Informal Cultural History of the 1970s", co-edited with Amin Gulgee and John McCarry (Oxford University Press, 2019).
Art Initiatives & Contributions
- Co-founded ASNA in 1999 to foster collaboration between contemporary art and traditional crafts.
- Organized three editions of the International ASNA Clay Triennial and Kumbhar Melas.
- Co-founded NuktaArt, Pakistan’s contemporary art magazine, and served as founding editor for ten years.
- Published in leading Pakistani and South Asian platforms including Newsline, Dawn, and The Karachi Collective.
Leadership & International Roles
- Served two terms as Vice President on the Board of the International Art Critics Association.
- Former Chair of the Election and Membership Committee.
- Currently chairs the Censorship and Freedom of Expression Committee.
- Jury member for the AICA Young Critic Award for two consecutive years.
- Jury member for the International Public Art Prize (2023).
- Member of the Academic Committee, International Institute of Public Art Prize at Shanghai University.
Current Positions
- Founding Member, Managing Trustee, and CEO of Karachi Biennale Trust (since 2016).
- Member of the Governing Body / Managing Committee of Noori Development Foundation.
